But in the city ranking, Moscow is the leader with 582 performances, followed by Vienna and Berlin coming in close after.
As we mentioned above, Giuseppe Verdi's "La Traviata" is one of the most popular operas performed at the Bolshoi Theater. The last version of La Traviata has been performed at the Bolshoi since 2012. It is directed by Francesca Zambello, the director of the Washington National Opera, who was able to poignantly retell the tragic love story of Violetta Valery, a courtesan, and Alfredo Germont, and young bourgeois.
Another popular opera at the Bolshoi Theater is "La Boheme" by Giacomo Puccini. The opera premiered at the Bolshoi in 1996, and has become a favorite ever since.
Even though Carmen is the third most popular opera in the world, the opera premiered at the Bolshoi Theater only in 2015. The opera is directed by Tugan Sokhiev and Alexei Borodin.
One of the oldest operas at the Bolshoi Theater is Giacomo Puccini's Tosca. It premiered in 1971, and has been performed since then. The opera itself is the 5th most popular opera in the world, right behind La Boheme. The opera repertoire also includes opera performances for the younger audience. The romantic opera for children in two acts, "The Story of Kai and Gerda," is one of the more popular ones.
